School Counselors
Vision Statement
The School Counseling Program at FMHS promotes a culture of equity, access, and achievement that prepares all students to be life-long learners as well as contributing members of their community.
Mission Statement
The School Counseling Program at FMHS supports every student within the learning community. School counselors provide and deliver programs that promote academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social-emotional development. As a result, every student is empowered to realize their full potential and become college and career ready to adapt and achieve success in an ever-changing world.
Counseling Framework at FMHS
The counseling team at FMHS supports every student's Academic achievement, College and Career readiness, and Emotional/social growth (ACE). We do so through:
-
Collaboration: We work closely with Advisors to provide lessons that cover the ACE areas. We also collaborate with families to ensure student success.
-
Advocacy: We advocate to close achievement and opportunity gaps, and to promote the well-being of all our students and families.
-
Equity: We promote equitable access to high quality education and equitable treatment of all students in school and in the community.
-
Leadership: As school leaders, we work closely with our Administration and educational networks to support all of our students.
-
Systemic Change: "school counselors who are social justice change agents have the beliefs, attitudes, knowledge and skills to identify and take responsibility for eradicating systemic barriers by first recognizing the educational inequalities that exist for students of color and those from low-income environments" (Griffin & Steen, 2011, p.76).
Our counseling lessons and supports are defined by American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards and the Multitiered System of Support (MTSS). We regularly meet as a team to manage and assess our program's effectiveness, which determines how we deliver services:
-
Direct services: classroom & small group instruction, assessments & advisement, short-term group & individual counseling, initiatives & events.
-
Indirect services: consultation, collaboration, referrals, student advocacy.
At the heart of our work is our students' success so they may ACE high school and beyond!
