At FMHS we put a high value on students being active members of their communities both in school and outside of school.  Students work on community service projects in their advisory and they are asked to complete community service on their own as well.  

In the 9th grade students begin to explore the difference between community service and community service learning.  They research different communities that they may want to help and explore how they can become involved.  At the end of the unit, the entire advisory participates in a project together and reflects on their experience.  In 10th, 11th and 12th grade, students take a closer look at the various communities they are a part of and the different communities in need.  They learn about the specific challenges of different groups of people and how they can have a voice to affect change.

For the independent community service component, students are asked to complete 20 hours of service each year outside of school.  Students document their service using the Community Service Log.  Note: 9th graders are only asked to complete 10 hours, as they do not start their community service unit until the spring term.

Advisors support students in their explorations and help them find placements if needed. Advisors also help students assess their progress using the Community Service Rubric.
